Professors across the nation have once again rated NIUâs Department of Accountancy among the elite in the nation.
The Public Accounting Reportâs 29th Annual Professorâs Survey, ranked NIUâs undergraduate program eighth (up 12 spots from last year) and its graduate program 10th (up 10 spots from last year) in the nation. Inclusion in the rankings places NIU in some highly regarded company including the University of Illinois and a number of other Big Ten programs and Notre Dame.
The recently released survey asked professors in the field what 10 programs they would recommend to students interested in entering the field. The NIU accountancy programs have been a fixture on the lists almost since their inception.
âWe are very proud to once again find ourselves in the upper echelon of programs on this list,â said Jim Young, chair of the Department of Accountancy. âThe goal of this program has always been, and continues to be, sustained excellence, so it is very satisfying to be included on this list year after year.
âThese rankings reflect the outstanding faculty, staff and students that we have at NIU,â Young added. âWe are honored to carry on the tradition of excellence established by our colleagues over the past 35 years.â
Also aiding in building the programâs reputation, Young said, is that it has evolved in recent years to offer top programs in a number of areas.
âOver the last few years we have revised our programs to reflect changes in profession. Our Master of Accounting Science program now includes a specific focus on leadership development and a revised undergraduate program â with new electives and an increased focus on communication skills development â begins in fall 2011. And, our highly respected CPA Review, CIA (Certified Internal Auditor) Review and CMA (Certified Management Accountant) Review prepare our students for these rigorous exams. Very few programs across the country can offer that kind of excellence across the board.â
The NIU Department of Accountancy graduates approximately 200 undergraduates a year and 125 masterâs students.
